Science Channel to Resurrect MYTHBUSTERS with New Reality Show

Just a few weeks ago, the greatest science show of a generation — Discovery Channel’s MythBusters — aired its final episode. The blueprints were all packed away and the show’s 200+ episodes moved to the Science Channel. Now, as reported exclusively by The Hollywood Reporter, the Science Channel is set to get MythBusters back on the air, with all new hosts and all new myths. But the next generation of MythBusters are going to have to prove their worth in a new reality show first.

According to THR, the reality show titled Search for the Next MythBusters will be 15 contestants competing to solve science-based challenges — some classic myths, some new conundrums. Episodes will have a heavy stunt and social media focus. Each week, a contestant will be eliminated by a panel of judges, each of whom will have a connection to the original MythBusters.

The search for this new crop of science communicators will be worldwide, and hopefuls will be able to submit videos to the Science Channel’s website if they want to apply. Ideal candidates are enthusiastic and intelligent, are capable makers, and have “nerves of steel.” Being willing to be “missing an eyebrow” will probably also help.

It’s unclear if the show the winning contestants will helm bears any resemblance to the institution Adam, Jamie, Kari, Grant, and Tory set up. Marc Etkind, the general manager of the Science Channel, told THR that the next iteration of MythBusters, whoever they are and however many, may follow the same format fans have come to know and love. But it could be totally different.

“We’ll see who emerges victorious and from those folks determine what the best format is,” he says. “It’s a long-running goal for Science Channel to have MythBusters on the air.”
