I have been sold on Scarlett Johansson‘s ability to sing since her brief karaoke scene in Lost In Translation. Sure, she sounded demure as the malaise-filled Charlotte, but you could tell she had a nice timbre to her voice. She explored her untapped skill in her now-defunct band with Este Haim, but has been quiet on the music front–until today!
In an effort to raise awareness for amfAR, an AIDS research foundation, Johansson and her new band, Sugar for Sugar, have contributed a cover of New Order’s “Bizarre Love Triangle” (interesting choice for this particular charitable effort?) to The Time Is Now, a charity album full of ’80s gems. Staying pretty faithful to New Order’s composition, Johansson delivers a resonant, well-articulated version of Peter Hook’s lyrics. You can imagine her, all these years later, donning the same pink wig from her breakout role and knocking this out of the park in a claustrophobic karaoke room in the heart of Tokyo.
Other musicians contributing to The Time Is Now include Phantogram covering Phil Collins, Aloe Blacc covering Michael Jackson, Lower Dens covering Hall & Oates, and much more. You can check out the full track list on the pre-order page, and read about the organization’s research efforts while you jam to ScarJo’s great cover. The Time Is Now will be available on October 7.

Matt Grosinger is the music editor of Nerdist and hopes Scarlett Johansson has an entire album with her new band.
