In the upcoming 007 film, Spectre, Daniel Craigâs James Bond will go up against âthe author of all of [his] pain.â But first, itâs time to meet the man who will perform the theme song for Spectre!
Sony and MGM have announced that British singer Sam Smith provided the opening song for Spectre, which is called âWritingâs on the Wall.â The song will be available to purchase and stream beginning on Friday, September 25.
âWritingâs on the Wallâ was co-written by Smith and Jimmy Napes, and it will have the unenviable task of following Adeleâs âSkyfallâ, which took home an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Original Song in addition to a Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media. Smith also has the honor of being the first British male solo artist to perform a James Bond theme song since Tom Jones sang the opening theme for Thunderball in 1965. Although some fans may point to Paul McCartneyâs famous Bond theme for Live and Let Die, it was performed by McCartney with his band, Wings.
âThis is one of the highlights of my career,â said Smith in a brief statement. âI am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it.â
Last year, Smithâs debut album, In The Lonely Hour hit #2 in the U.S. and went all the way to #1 in the United Kingdom. Smithâs most successful single to date is âStay With Meâ (pictured above), but itâs likely to be quickly surpassed by his new Bond theme.
Spectre will be released in the U.S. on Friday, November 6.
