SALEM’s Marilyn Manson-ified Opening Credits are Creepy, Cool, and Super Witchy

After premiering to 2.3 million people last week, WGN America’s Salem finally has an opening sequence prepared for episode two. And, well, it’s going to be pretty creepy — though what else would you expect from the musical stylings of Marilyn Manson, eh? Yes, that’s right, the dark goth rocker has teamed up with the series’ composer, Tyler Bates, to create a stunning opener that’s sure to impress both fans of the series and others. Because doesn’t everyone love a good opening sequence?

Dark and macabre with flecks of witchy influence, the ethereally unnerving tune is sure to be spellbinding to the new drama. According to Manson himself, “The song ‘Cupid Carries a Gun’ was the last track we just finished for my new album. The occult and witchcraft [are] so often used in cinema with a heinous disregard for even researching its origins. However, I liked the themes of Salem. It looks at the witch trials without being cliche like most modern films.”

Manson worked alongside the series’ composer Tyler Bates to craft the tune, which started out as nothing more than a bit of fun. “Manson and I wrote a draft of ‘Cupid Carries a Gun’ shortly before I began working on the score for Salem,” explained Bates. “A couple weeks later I saw the title sequence and the song immediately came to mind. I showed it to Manson for fun more than anything, and it inspired us to finish the song that night. The next day I played it for [series creator] Brannon Braga and he said that [the song] was the perfect tone and attitude for the show’s main titles.”

What do you think of the credits? Are you watching Salem? Let us know in the comments.

  1. Nancy says:

I like it, It got me hooked.  I’m game for something different besides serial killer TV. One is okay, but there are four shows prime time about serial killers.  They are all good show but 4 is too many.

  2. T_ says:

Whatever…it has been done. Try the prematurely cancelled NBC TV show FEAR ITSELF to hear Serge (form System of a Down) do it better and creepier than this song is. Manson is so a decade ago.

  3. Susanna says:

The pre-show hype made it sound like this was going to be more real than fiction. Witches don’t have titties on their thighs nor do they let the familiars suckle them. WTF?
So disappointed in the show from first watch.
Sad, because there was so much potential, but the lame use of fake witch lore lost me quick. Not going to bother watching 2nd episode.

  4. Sternschrei says:

Enjoyed the first episode, not something I expected from a channel like WGN.

  5. d_toval says:

the intro does reminds me to true blood intro… however i most say that i do like the show so far, hopefully it will only get better.

  6. Melanie says:

Cool song but the opening is a rip off of AHS: Coven, True Detective, and Vikings. Oh well, I still love Marilyn Manson.

  7. Captain says:

This looks exactly the same as the opening to a few different HBO shows, as well as american horror story:Coven. This is NOT original at all. It’s not bad, but it feels very stolen.
