Although Tamashii Nations announced it at the end of October, somehow I missed the great news that the Sailor Moon line of S.H. Figuarts figures is expanding, and the newest addition is none other than Black Lady! If you’re not familiar with the Sailor Moon anime or manga, and you’re noting the similarities between Sailor Moon’s hair and Black Lady’s ‘do, you are indeed on to something.
You see, Black Lady (or Wicked Lady as she was known in the ’90s DiC English dub) is the alternate universe, grown-up version of Future Sailor Moon’s daughter Chibiusa. There’s a lot of timeline-mixing between the past, present, and future going on in the series, so you kind of just have to accept it and move on. Chibiusa is kidnapped as a child and brainwashed into becoming the evil Black Lady by the powerful character known as Wiseman. One of the most awkward (and even a little bit icky) moments of Black Lady’s stint in the series is the amorous obsession she harbors for Tuxedo Mask, who — though she’s too brainwashed to remember — is the younger version of her dad. Yikes.
ANYWAY. Black Lady is still an interesting villain for the series, because her power is tied directly to her lineage. Her mother is the Guardian of the Moon, and her father is, to put it simply, Sailor Earth. So, that’s a pretty powerful bloodline. We’ve already reviewed the Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask figures in one of our previous Sunday Toy Chest pieces, and you can bet that we’ll be doing the same for Black Lady when the figure is released. It is being released in the existing line of Sailor Moon figures, so we can expect the Black Lady figure to stand roughly 5.5 inches tall. Furthermore, all release information we’ve seen so far points to the figure being packaged with a seated Wiseman figure.
