Consider this a capital “R” rumor for the time being, but it is a juicy one; we already know that Sony and Marvel Studios are circling several young actors for the role of Spider-Man for the upcoming reboot, with Ender’s Game star Asa Butterfield apparently at the very top of that list. But now we’ve got another rumor suggesting casting is already underway for that film’s villain, and according to this latest report, none other than Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey is being eyed to play Norman Osborn, a.k.a. the Green Goblin.
While this is just a rumor, there are a few things that make me think it’s a definite possibility. First off, McConaughey has recently said that he’s circled a few roles in superhero movies from both Marvel and DC/Warner Bros. recently, but ultimately none of the parts were the right fit. But he is certainly the right age to play Norman Osborn. Secondly, in recent years, Norman Osborn has extended well beyond just being a Spider-Man antagonist, and in the comics, formed H.A.M.M.E.R., a more aggressive replacement for S.H.I.E.L.D, which became a huge thorn in the side of the Avengers as well. Could Osborn be a character that Marvel Studios plans to share with Sony just as much as Spider-Man himself? Considering one of the other major Avengers villains, Doctor Doom, is currently off limits to Marvel Studios, they might want to use this opportunity to get Osborn, and an A-list actor like Matthew McConaughey is a logical choice.
What do you guys think of Matthew McConaughey as a potential Green Goblin? Are you excited about the idea, or after Willem Dafoe and Chris Cooper, are you over Norman Osborn already? Let us know in the comments below!
