Comic book movie super-scooper El Mayimbe recently dropped a doozy of a rumor suggesting that, contrary to what some have suggested, the sequel to Man of Steel was not “indefinitely put on hold”, but was in fact offered to Mad Max Fury Road director George Miller. He also recently suggested that the villain for the proposed sequel is said to be none other than Superman’s #2 bad guy after Lex Luthor, the alien A.I. called Brainiac.
Now some other juicy tidbits about the proposed sequel are coming to light as well. In Man of Steel, General Zod went on his “let’s terraform Earth into New Krypton” evil villain plan because he knew that Superman had the genetic codex of the entire Kryptonian race in his cells. Apparently, in the sequel, it looks like Brainiac is going to be after the same thing (and seeing how he is something of a cosmic collector of sorts, it makes sense). In this case though, he is not trying to retrieve the codex from Superman, but from another survivor from Krypton: Kal-El’s cousin, Kara Zor-El, better known as Supergirl.
As some fans might already know, the seeds for Supergirl have already been planted in not only Man of Steel, but in a prequel comic to the movie that came out in 2013 by writer David Goyer. The prequel comic featured Kara’s story as she goes out and decides to become a member of Kryptonâs Explorers Guild, citizens tasked with searching the cosmos for suitable planets, and triggering terraforming projects to make them inhabitable to Kryptonians. It’s her ship that Clark Kent finds frozen in the ice in Man of Steel, where there are several kryo-pods. Some have dead bodies in them…but one was open and empty. I’d bet real money that was Kara’s, who is out there on Earth…somewhere. Plus, as Fury Road fans know, George Miller loves him some strong female characters, and it’s the Supergirl addition that some say has him interested in this movie.
Not only is this proposed movie sequel going to have Brainiac and Supergirl, but according to the original rumor, Bizarro as well. Supposedly, Superman’s mentally unstable clone is created by Brainiac this time, giving Superman an equal in strength to fight. After Lex Luthor, Brainiac and Bizarro are Superman’s biggest villains, and neither of them have made it to movie screens before, so I’d say it’s high time.
There are a few things that might prove to be an obstacle for these rumors coming to fruition; for starters, there is a new Supergirl TV show premiering this fall on CBS. However, Warner Bros. has shown they have little problem having multiple versions of the same character in different mediums, as shown by the Flash having a TV series and a movie with a different actor on the way. The other thing is that Brainiac was the rumored villain for Justice League Part One, but those plans may have changed.
In any event, this sounds like the Superman movie fans have been wanting for a long time. Hopefully George Miller says yes if an offer has indeed been made, and hopefully we don’t have to wait till 2020 to see it.
