Rumor: The Red Hood Set to Appear in the DC Cinematic Universe

Could we be seeing Jason Todd (a.k.a. the Red Hood) in an upcoming DC Universe movie? If rumors are to be believed, the second character to bear the mantle of Robin (after the original Robin, Dick Grayson, graduated to Nightwing status), who was famously murdered by the Joker, is going to get a visual nod in the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, as his uniform will be on display in a case in the Batcave, much as it was in the comics for many years after his death.

But that’s not the only Jason Todd reference coming from the DC Cinematic Universe; reports indicate that David Ayer’s upcoming Suicide Squad movie will also reference the death of Robin at the hands of the Joker. Apparently, it’s the reason that Harley Quinn and the Joker are estranged in the movie. For a character that was once so unpopular that fans literally voted to have him killed off, he’s certainly made quite the comeback.

So will we actually see Jason Todd in the flesh on the big screen anytime soon? It’s said that John Wick directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch are being courted by Warner Brothers to direct a DC film for them, and that given the Red Hood’s current popularity, they are prioritizing him in the DC cinematic universe.

Although the return to life of Jason Todd back in 2005 in DC’s Infinite Crisis series was convoluted to say the least, the version in the animated DC film Batman: Under the Red Hood was more steamlined and made much more sense. Utilizing a great script by Judd Winick (who wrote the original comics story) it was one of the best DC animated features, and had great, meaty roles for the Joker and Batman, not to mention Nightwing and underused Bat-rogue Black Mask. It would serve as a terrific template for a Red Hood centric movie. Here’s hoping someone at Warner Brothers is thinking the same thing.
