Rumor: Felicity Jones in Talks for STAR WARS Spin-Off Film

Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars spin-off has been all the buzz lately and the latest rumor focuses on Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything). A few weeks ago, Gary Whitta wrapped up his work on the project after penning the first draft of the script. It’s rumored that Chris Weitz (About a Boy) has been brought on board to replace him. And then there are the rumors about the female lead in the film. Remember, we still have no idea who or what Edwards’ spin-off film is about or who the female character is.

At the end of last week, a couple of sites reported that Tatiana Maslany had been cast in the movie. The fact that Maslany was reportedly in the running for the role and recently dropped out of a play due to a scheduling conflict left some certain her involvement in the spin-off was a done deal. However, The Wrap reports Maslany has joined the indie film Two Lovers and a Bear. It’s not quite Star Wars.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jones is in talks to play the female lead. This has not been confirmed by Lucasfilm or Disney. I could speculate about who she could possibly be playing, but it’s a long list. The character could be from any existing Star Wars films or television series or someone completely new. I think Bob Iger’s words about the spin-off focusing on the characters from The Force Awakens can be interpreted in different ways since he said “these characters” and not “The Force Awakens characters.” I do hope we learn the basics about the spin-off – the title and the primary cast – at Star Wars Celebration in April.

The spin-off will be in theaters on December 16, 2016. For more on some of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens rumors floating around out there, check out today’s Nerdist News!
