Rumor: Drew Struzan to Come Out of Retirement to Paint STAR WARS: EPISODE VII Poster?

Once upon a time, movie posters were works of art — literally. Instead of slapped together Photoshop images of someone with their back turned to you for some reason (even Godzilla has his back turned in the poster!) these were meticulously painted images that conveyed the story and scope of a particular movie. One of the greatest movie poster artists ever is an artist by the name of Drew Struzan. If you don’t know the name, then for sure you know the images — iconic posters for movies like  Blade Runner, Big Trouble in Little China,The Muppet Movie, Coming To America, First Blood, Risky Business, An American Tail, and The Goonies. And that’s just a small sample.

And then there are the big ones — Struzan created the iconic posters behind the Back to the Future, Indiana Jones and the Star Wars movies. Although he was one of many artists to make a poster for the original Star Wars, from the point of about 1997 on, around the time the Special Editions of the original trilogy came out, Struzan has been Lucasfilm’s go-to guy for all movie posters pertaining to Star Wars. In 2008, he announced his retirement after completing the poster for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Say what you want about the movie (or the prequels for that matter), there is no denying that the posters for said movies are gorgeous. Take a look at some of his most famous work in the gallery below:

But now, according to a rumor posted at the Schmoes Know, it looks like the call of the Force has possibly lured Struzan out of retirement. Well, that or the call of JJ Abrams and lots and lots of money. Either case, it’s a win-win for everyone involved. Knowing we’ll have an epic poster featuring the original cast once again brought to life by the hands of Drew Struzan is reason enough to be excited for Episode VII.  In the meantime, Netflix has an excellent documentary on the life and work of Drew Struzan called Drew: The Man Behind the Poster that you should totally check out as soon as possible.

Would you like to see Drew Struzan take on the Star Wars: Episode VII poster? Which of his famous works is your favorite? Sound off in the comments below.
