Rumor: Diego Luna Cast in STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE

The first Star Wars anthology film may have added another soldier to the Rebellion. Variety reports that Diego Luna (Elysium) is set to take the lead with Felicity Jones in Star Wars: Rogue One. The movie directed by Gareth Edwards takes place in between Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope–closer to A New Hope. Rather than focusing on Jedi and the Force, Rogue One will follow the troops on the ground fighting against the Empire. The plot centers on a group of resistance fighters who come together to steal the plans for the Death Star.

Jones is one of those resistance fighters and Luna is reportedly one, too. Neither Lucasfilm or Disney have confirmed any casting besides Felicity Jones, but it’s also rumored that Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler) and Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline) are part of the cast as a rebel fighter and a villain, respectively. Not too shabby as far as diversity goes.

Though it’s tempting to start fan-casting and imagine Luna as a live-action Ezra Bridger or Kanan Jarrus from Star Wars Rebels (characters from the animated series could conceivably leap to the big screen), we have to remember that Rogue One isn’t about the Jedi. My hope for Jones, Luna, or anyone in Rogue One’s primary cast is that none of them are connected to Star Wars families we already know. I want to see the galaxy expanded with some different names and new heroes.

If the rumors are true and Luna does end up being announced for Rogue One, would you rather him portray a brand new character or a relative of someone we’ve met? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
