Well this could be great â if it turns out to have the weight of truth behind it! According to the rumor mill, Rachel McAdams has been offered the female lead in Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange film. The only two confirmed castings thus far have been the role of Doctor Strange himself â who will be played by Benedict Cumberbatch â and Tilda Swinton (yessss!) has signed on as The Ancient One.
Rachel is currently starring as arguably the best part of the current season of True Detective, which has been … not like the last. She’ll also be seen in the upcoming Southpaw, the Jake Gyllenhaal-as-determined-boxer flick. According to Rope of Silicon and Comic Book Movie, the safe money is on McAdams taking the role of Clea, Stephen Strange’s eventual love interest and fellow practitioner of magic. Clea has roots in the Dark Dimension, so if Rachel McAdams is in the movie and if she’s playing Clea, this might point to signs of Doctor Strange‘s story arc. Speculation is all we can offer though, until Marvel starts dishing out the details.
What we do know: Doctor Strange will tell the story of Dr. Stephen Strange, a contrary neurosurgeon whose entire world is grounded in science until (dun dun dun) a terrible accident awakens his force sensitivity awareness of the magical world. Heretofore, magic in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has largely been the purview of the Thor movies. Seeing as we’ll be introduced to Doctor Strange during his transition to becoming the Sorcerer Supreme, it’s a fair assumption that we’ll be getting a much bigger piece of the magical picture than simply “magic is just unquantified science.”
