UPDATE: Rosario Dawson Out of NEW MUTANTS, Alice Braga Steps In

Update 6.29.17: Well, that was fast: after previous reports stated that Rosario Dawson was all-but-confirmed for New Mutants, the new X-Men movie, it seems as though she has exited the project for reasons that, according to The Hollywood Reporter, “remain unclear.” Stepping into that role? Actress Alice Braga, who you may have previously seen in I Am Legend, Predators, Elysium, and star of the television series Queen of the South on USA Network, will tackle the role of Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a sorta mentor for the rest of the cast. We will update as more information becomes available!

Previously 5.25.17: After years of saving the asses of the Marvel heroes of Hell’s Kitchen, it looks like Rosario Dawson may finally get some super skills of her own. News has it that Dawson may team up with Maisie “Arya Stark” Williams and Anya Taylor-Joy in Fox’s forthcoming New Mutants film. The X-Men spin-off has recruited Dawson to star as a sort of mentor to the fledgling mutants.

In a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, Dawson has allegedly been tapped to play Cecilia Reyes, a determined, ambitious doctor who first appeared in the X-Men comics in 1997. A medical doctor with the ability to generate a protective bio-field around herself, Reyes previously rebuffed an offer to become a part of Professor X’s school, preferring to keep her mutant status a secret in order to continue saving lives at the hospital.

After watching her nurse the likes of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Daredevil, and Iron Fist as the MCU’s Claire Temple, as well as voice Batgirl in The LEGO Batman Movie, it’s fun to see Dawson finally get a chance to join in on the live action Marvel superheroics.

Nerdist has reached out for comment but had not heard back at the time of publication.

As we’ve previously reported, New Mutants is set to take a different approach to the X-world, going full-steam-ahead into the horror genre, an interesting and exciting choice for these young would-be heroes. Dawson, if the deal closes, would join Williams’ Rahne “Wolfsbane” Sinclair, a girl who survived an abusive religious upbringing (and turns herself into a wolf), and Taylor-Joy’s Ilyana “Magik” Rasputin, a sorceress who frequently teleports in and out of a demon realm known as the Limbo dimension.

Needless to say, New Mutants sounds poised to be full of badass ladies and we are here. for. it. Are you? Let us know in the comments below.

Could we possibly see an Avengers/X-Men team-up movie?
