ROGUE ONE Gets an Old School VHS Commercial

Though Rogue One is a direct prequel to the original Star Wars movie A New Hope, with the two movies ending and beginning at almost the same point), the films were released nearly 40 years apart. During that time, technology made it increasingly easy to enjoy your favorite space opera from the comfort of your own home (unless you want to enjoy a Blu-ray of the original, non-edited theatrical release that is, then you can to go hell). But these past few decades’ technological updates mean that no one will ever see the heroic exploits of Jyn Erso on VHS. However, thanks to this great mock-up commercial, we can at least see what that might have looked like.

This fun VHS trailer was put together by the YouTube channel Damien Kazan Filmmaker, and it doesn’t just capture the right look of old VHS tapes (seriously, young people, this is what it looked like watching a movie on tape), it is also pitch perfect in getting the tone and style of the standard videotape commercial. It’s not just the visuals that have come a long way in the home entertainment industry; the way that movies are promoted have advanced quite a bit too.

Although, Darth Vader’s such a bad ass he made it so we still were genuinely pumped up to watch this lower quality version. I guess when you’re the galaxy’s scariest villain, you can overcome the shortcomings of home video’s low-def shortcomings.
