ROGUE ONE May Not Use the Iconic STAR WARS Crawl

Way to bury the crawl, guys. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy casually dropped a fairly big-deal tidbit about Rogue One and we totally almost missed it. Apparently Rogue One: A Star Wars Story may not get that iconic opening crawl so many of us have come to expect as a major stage-setter for any sort of Star Wars universe film. Because it’s not part of the original saga films!

While it makes sense to us — the films will be different not only in tone, but in the scope of the story itself, so changing up the framing devices helps to really nail that bit home — others may be upset at the news and want to understand the reasoning behind it. For those of you in the latter camp, we should note that it’s something that has yet to be set in stone because the discussions about it are ongoing. “We talk about that all the time,” Kennedy stated. And the reasoning behind it makes a lot of sense.

“It’s something that we’re right in the midst of discussing even now, so I don’t want to say definitively what we’re doing,” said Kennedy. “The crawl and some of those elements live so specifically within the ‘saga’ films that we are having a lot of discussion about what will define the [stand-alone] Star Wars Stories separate and apart from the saga films. So we’re right in the middle of talking about that.”

And, no doubt, the ripple effect of this decision will spill over into other spin-off films, like the young Han Solo outing slated for 2018.

Would you prefer to see Rogue One continue the tradition, or are you for the change in framing device for non-saga films? Let us know in the comments below.

And here’s everything we know about Rogue One thus far!
