ROBOCOP Returns with a Teaser Trailer

Alex Murphy is dead. Long live the new Alex Murphy. Joel Kinnaman is stepping into the silver suit… er black cyborg body of the future of law enforcement. Sam Jackson, Gary Oldman and Michael Keaton rebuild Detroit cop, husband, and father Alex Murphy into the cop of the future as the leaders of OCP. Abbie Cornish will be adding an element not seen as much in the original film, playing Alex’s dedicated wife, who wants to see her husband, not a machine.

If fans are open to it, Robocop looks like it could be the same kind of fun conversation starter the original film was in 1987. That film highlighted over-the-top violence as an opportunity to discuss topics as varied as the disparity between the rich and poor in a dying city to the oversaturation of media in our daily lives. (“I’d buy that for a dollar!”) The new release could easily open up conversations like what drone warfare in an urban environment means to ordinary citizens. Could corporate authority lead to an America controlled by privateers and mercenaries? And lastly, what really did happen when Robocop, a Cylon and KIT walked into a bar?

While we’re always prone to be distrustful of a remake of a beloved property, based on this trailer, we’ll be front and center when the new Robocop reaches theaters in February 2014.

Oooh! I’ve meant to listen to Mike and Tom Eat Snacks (that’s on the Nerdist netorwk, right?), but I’m stuffed to the gills with podcasts already. I usually listen to two episodes of various things on the train each day, but there’s so much more I want to cram into my earholes if I had the time.I haven’t listened to Luke Burbank’s show, but I think he’s on Wait! Wait! Don’t Tell Me! a lot, right? Who is your friend from WTF?! That’s so awesome. He gets some great guests, and, as of today, he’s officially going to be broadcast on IFC as well.

    That’s a wetohlhoug-t-lut answer to a challenging question

  3. Keydren says:

This piece was cogent, wertiwl-tlen, and pithy.

  4. michaelalexkawa says:

It does not look as bad as I thought it would ,when I first heard of the reboot . Michael Keaton for the win ,he is awesome .

  5. The shooting scene where the original Alex Murphy is more dramatic and emotional than being blown up. The original Robocop was a little clunky but I think that’s why you would feel more for him in his position. However the new Robocop seems like a Superhero. I can”t help think about Iron Man whenever he opened up his helmet. It’ll be a fun movie. It could lose some of that emotion from the original as many reboots but I could be a little presumptuous.

  6. Bill says:

Nerd fail; it’s KITT, not KIT. 😉

  7. JetpackBlues says:

The essence of the original ROBOCOP is there, but with the squad of Cylon-eque automatons, drones and super ED-209, the point of him being a singular hero for New Detroit is diluted in what seems like a one-man assault on OCP and ridiculous odds.

“But that’s what the original was!”

Sort of. And I doubt this will be an R-rated flick.

I just watched Dredd this past weekend, and I’ve seen the new Total Recall, by comparison to the originals they were visually better. But trying to adapt an existing story always loses something in translation. It also dispenses with the campy-ness that makes the original so nostalgically endearing.

    I’m old….

  8. Matt says:

This looks about as good as the Total Recall remake…in other words its a pointless bastardisation of a beloved movie which doesn’t need to be remade, because it’s already perfect exactly as it is. So, he knows he’s human, he’s mostly human rather than part of a head and a little digestive tract inside a robot, Nancy is a central figure because every single movie has to have a prominent romantic sub-plot for some reason regardless of what the film is about, they crap on a lot about America (something for Americans to rally behind, the symbol of American justice, blah blah freaking blah), and ED209 looks like Michael bays transformers. Count me out.

  9. jb says:

    and eww.. horrible accent..

  10. CJ says:

The Trailer (glad I found it on Youtube because I don’t deal with Apple’s Quicktime – bitches!) did not reveal enough (possibly because it wasn’t a red band trailer).yet –

I agree with Jaron – if this film is not a hard R? I will ignore it

I also agree with Rahdull – it does look like parts of Robocop 1 & 2 were combined (I can handle the new suit, but not the motorbike as it looks stopid – Robocop needs to be in a Hummer, or the equivalent to Christopher Nolan’s Bat Mobile)

Sony needs to do a better job promoting – 1 trailer & 1 viral video is not enough

  11. rahdull says:

from what i saw in the trailer it seems like their packing the first two movies in one, and i dont know if i like, also if i see a Japanese android or a brain with eyeballs still attached im out

  12. Jaron says:

If this isn’t rated R then it’s a no go. However this could end up like the Dredd reboot/remake and be at least IMO awesome. We’ll see though.
