Robert Downey Jr. Calls CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR His “Little IRON MAN 4”

For all of you Marvel fans out there that were hoping that the Iron Man trilogy would soon become a quadrilogy, I’m afraid Robert Downey Jr. has just burst your bubble. While promoting the upcoming Captain Ameica: Civil War in Atlanta, he said that as far as he’s concerned, Civil War is his Iron Man 4.

“In a way it’s Cap 3, but for me it’s like my little Iron Man 4, and then it’s back to the thing we all recognize. Everything pulls over to the side of the road when the thunder of an Avengers thing comes through because that’s how it is until it changes. If it changes.”

As much as Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Iron Man is the foundation on which the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe is built, the truth is, it’s way more fun to see Tony Stark play against the other heroes of the MCU than fight yet another armor or tech-based villain again. The well of interesting Iron Man villains doesn’t run very deep in the comics (unless they decided to introduce us to the real Mandarin, who they have said is out there… somewhere).

So Mandarin aside, given the opportunity to have another solo Iron Man movie or have RDJ show up and start trading quips with Chris Pratt in Guardians of the Galaxy 3, I’ll take the latter. And that’s just a hypothetical, folks — there is no news of RDJ starring in Guardians 3. But hey… you never know.

Aside from Civil War, Robert Downey Jr. is set to appear in both Avengers: Infinity War movies, which would put his total appearances as Iron Man in the MCU at eight films (nine, if you count his cameo at the end of The Incredible Hulk). Infinity Wars will mark eleven years playing the role of Iron Man, so by that point, he may not want to wear the gold and red armor ever again. (And though we’d be sad, we honestly wouldn’t blame him.)

Are you ok with no Iron Man 4, or do you want more solo movies for the Armored Avenger? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
