Rob Zombie Puts BROAD STREET BULLIES On Hold, Plans Horror Flick Next

In the ten or so years that Rob Zombie has been making movies, he has quickly emerged as one of the most polarizing and interesting figures in horror. Zombie began directing music videos for his band White Zombie in the ’90s and debuted his first feature, House of 1000 Corpses, in 2003 (well, hello, the Nerdist himself, Chris Hardwick!). Since then, he brought back the Firefly family in The Devil’s Rejects, rebooted Halloween, and even directed an episode of CSI:Miami.

Zombie spoke with New Zealand’s 3 News while on tour and revealed that after years of prep on his ’70s Philadelphia Flyers epic Broad Street Bullies, he was putting that film on the back burner because something else has come up.

Zombie explained, “I’d been working on this hockey film for over two years, it took so much research and work, and I was literally sitting with someone going, ‘You know, I have this other idea…’ And I said the idea and they go, ‘We’ll make that!’ And I put together a one-line pitch, because I didn’t want to go to pitch meetings and do all that. I’d call them on the phone and go, “Here’s my idea, blah blah blah,’ and they’re like, ‘We’re in!’ So you slave over something for years and it’s still difficult, and you say some crazy thing off the top of your head and they say ‘Where do we sign?’ And that turned into a weird bidding war. And that became the next film.”

What would Zombie’s next horror film be like? While he was tight lipped about details, he did reveal, “I think it’s something fans of the other stuff will like. Probably fans of The Devil’s Rejects will enjoy the most. It’s not connected to that film but it’s more on that headspace.”

My favorite horror film of 2013 was The Lords of Salem, although it was met with both mixed fan and critical reception. However, I thought it showed a lot of growth on his part as a director, so I’ll be curious to see what a movie more in The Devil’s Rejects headspace looks like now.

Zombie is currently on tour overseas and returns to the U.S. this spring.

Lords of Salem (in my opinion) was crap.

  3. WCP says:

Why not save us all the trouble, and have Kevin Smith write your hockey flick Zombie. Kev makes filthy language sounds so much more natural. That’ll give you time to bring the visual flair he so always lacks… = )

I think Rob Zombie has undeniable talent in terms of creating striking imagery. I just think he doesn’t have the slightest concern for character and story, so I think his visual skill is constantly undermined by what a terrible writer he is.

That said I would be interested to see him be given a great script and see if he can make a good movie of it without turning it into another unpleasant white trash freak show.

    Grammar writer, fucking grammar.

Do you remember FANBOYS? Commas are great for separating your clauses…
