The period of time between Rick and Morty season 2’s finale and the eventual beginning of season 3 is approaching two calendar years, and while we know it’s on the way soon at this point, that only makes us thirstier. Why else do you think people stopped whatever the hell they were doing on a Saturday night in April to watch the suddenly streaming season 3 premiere? Luckily, it’s not been a wasteland of Rickless, Mortyless science fiction-free nothingness; Oni Press has been keeping the dream alive with some excellent comic book storyarcs, and their newest will be a riff on the mobile game known as Pocket Mortys.
The Rick and Morty crew have always been great with their spinoff material, and Pocket Mortys was one of the best: a humorous take on Pokemon, where you as Rick get to catch, control, and make fight all of the weird alternate-universe Mortys there are to be found. It was both a great joke and a fun game, but the beauty of the Rick and Morty multiverse is that everything and anything can be canon.
According to AV Club‘s exclusive, next week’s issue, Rick and Morty: Pocket Like You Stole It #1 will find Morty desperately trying to escape his maniacal grandfather’s menagerie of Mortys. Written by Tini Howard with art by Marc Ellerby and colors by Katy Farina, the saga opens with Morty and Mermaid Morty on the run (so to speak) but running out of food and water. Naturally, they don’t stay on the run too long…
Take a look at the two covers for the issue, the first showing off Rick’s impressive array of weird-ass Mortys.
The second has Morty climbing up Tetris pieces, a very nice nod to the popular Game Boy game that was unseated by Pokemon.
The issue will go on sale next Wednesday, July 5, and you can still download the Pocket Mortys game, if you want to catch your own Mortys. Because who doesn’t want a creepy amount of Mortys?
