RICK AND MORTY Designers Explain ‘Pickle Rick’ and Rat Bodies

Tonight, one of the wildest moments from the Rick and Morty season 3 trailer will arrive. Behold “Pickle Rick!” For reasons yet to be explained, everyone’s favorite animated mad scientist has transformed himself into a pickle. And judging from the early footage of the episode, Pickle Rick is going to be in quite a pickle himself, as he rolls into the sewers and faces the rats that live there. But Rick is always prepared to escalate any situation, even when he doesn’t really have a body of his own.

There are minor spoilers ahead in Adult Swim’s latest video, which offers an advance look at Rick’s transformation into a pickle. That includes Rick’s appropriation of several rat bodies into a kind of rat suit. There’s also some absolutely brutal NSFW images of Pickle Rick killing several rats in hilariously dark ways.

In the clip, writer Dan Guterman jokingly compares the “Pickle Rick” episode to Fievel Goes West, the second movie in the An American Tail franchise. But given the nightmarish rats that show up in this footage, we think a more appropriate comparison would be to The Secret of NIMH.

According to character designer Kendra Melton, the Rick and Morty designers came up with nearly 100 different versions of the rat suit that Pickle Rick creates in the episode. Several of those designs are glimpsed here, including some that prominently featured rat butts and testicles. The final version of the outfit plays up Rick’s “pickleness.” “It’s a gritty episode,” said series co-creator Dan Harmon. “It’s super violent, it’s very personal, and Susan Saranadon is in it…probably because her kid’s a fan.”

Rick and Morty’s newest episode airs tonight at 11:30 pm on Adult Swim.
