Review: SILK #1 Reads Like Classic Spider-Man

There are, at the moment, a lot of Spider-Man related books on the shelves. We’re not just talking about books starring Spider-Man, but books that feature characters that revolve around his world or exist because of their interaction with the character. Some feel unique and like a completely separate entity. Some, like Silk, feel like a Spider-Man comic book. Literally, Silk moves, flows, and reads like a classic Spidey comic, and that’s not a bad thing. In fact, Silk is a very good comic book, even when it’s a little too familiar for its own good.

Cindy Moon is a wisecracking vigilante with the powers of a spider. She’s funny, spends a lot of time giving us her inner monologue and is just trying to piece her life together, one day at a time. There was a point in time you could have said the same about Peter Parker, and folks who miss those days will find lots to love here. This is not to say that Silk is not her own character, because she is. Writer Robbie Thompson does a great job of giving her a unique voice and drive. It’s reminiscent, but not repetitive.

Stacy Lee’s art is great as well. She brings a lot of personality to the pages, wether it’s a quiet office conversation or a big battle up the streets of New York. The fight scenes look particularly great; there’s always a sense of scale and energy, a feeling that the characters are about to burst from the page. If nothing else, Silk #1 is a pretty, pretty comic book. Even if you are not a fan of spider themed superheroes, you can’t deny that this thing looks great.

There are times when Silk gets a little too muddled in its own story. There’s a lot of double-crossing and double agents (sorta like another female spider-themed character) and it doesn’t always help the story. Cindy Moon is compelling enough on her own, so here’s hoping her story doesn’t become too much of a tangled web. Regardless, Silk #1 is enough fun that adding the second and third issue to your pull list is a no brainer, especially if you like Spider-Man comic books.
