Report: WONDER WOMAN Movie to Have Michelle MacLaren as Director

It’s been rumored for a while now that the recently announced Wonder Woman movie, starring Gal Gadot and set for June 2017, was aiming for a woman director at the helm. Names bandied about included the likes of Punisher: War Zone’s Lexi Alexander and Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow. But according to various sources, it looks like vaunted TV director Michelle MacLaren will be making her big screen directorial debut with Wonder Woman.

Before any of you fanboys and fangirls start foaming at the mouth that Warner Brothers and DC Entertainment are giving such an iconic property to a first-time movie director, let me list off some of MacLaren’s television credits, and that should silence your tears real quick. She directed several episodes of Game of Thrones, including the one that featured the Purple Wedding, not to mention episodes of The Walking Dead and over eleven episodes of Breaking Bad, on which she also served as executive producer. These are episodes of shows that regularly outclassed any and all Hollywood movies, so it’s high time that MacLaren got the chance to make the jump to the silver screen. Of all the female directors that are being looked at, she seems to be the very best choice. Not just for Wonder Woman, but for pretty much anything.

Some might as why Wonder Woman needs a female director at all. While she might not need it, there have been so few women at the helm of any Hollywood blockbusters that, at times it feels like a huge joke. Moreover, it’s a huge example of the sexism very much entrenched in Hollywood today. Not to mention, Wonder Woman was created to be an icon for young women everywhere; it’s only fitting that a movie starring the Amazing Amazon should finally hit theaters with a strong female presence behind it creatively. Not much is known about the plot of the Wonder Woman movie, but it’s been rumored to be a prequel set in the 1920s or ’40s. I vote Wonder Woman in the forties, because watching Nazis get the crap beat out of them always makes for a good time.

Wonder Woman was created as a visual execution of an comic artist’s fetish for “Amazon” women who domineer men. See: Golden Lasso/BDSM.

…Not that there’s anything wrong with that. However she was not created for young girls.

I was pulling for her to get the gig.  She directed the episode of the Walking Dead with the barn reveal and did a fantastic job.  The way the camera showed Sophia’s point of view and the tension in that scene is fantastic.  Plus her episodes of Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones.  I only wish she could do Captain Marvel also.
