Report: Matt Ryan Close To A Deal To Be The New CONSTANTINE

It seems the search for the small screen Hellblazer has come to an end: Deadline is reporting Welsh actor Matt Ryan (Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior) is finalizing a deal to play the lead in NBC’s drama pilot Constantine, from Warner Bros. Television. Based on his picture (and the fact that he’s from the U.K.), it’s safe to say that Matt Ryan fits in more with the traditional idea of what the character looks like than Keanu Reeves, who played the part in the 2005 Francis Lawrence movie also called Constantine. This new version is being written by The Mentalist executive producer Daniel Cerone and Mr. DC himself, David S. Goyer.

For this new television version, John Constantine is described as “a working-class Londoner with rakish good looks, scruffy blond hair, deadpan humor, and signature trench coat, who has been studying the dark arts since he was a teenager. When the daughter of a late friend is targeted by demons, Constantine steps in to save her.” Sounds about right. Originally created by Alan Moore for his eighties era run of Swamp Thing, the character then spun off into his own series Hellblazer, which ran from 1987-2013 and 300 issues. He was recently folded back into the DC Universe proper with an all-new series. Constantine is the third DC Universe pilot being prepared for the 2014 Fall season, along with Gotham on Fox and The Flash for the CW. If all of these get series orders, it might be fair to say that while Marvel owns the movies, TV is DC’s.

I wonder if he’ll have his trademark chain smoking trait in this series? It won’t feel the same if he doesn’t.

Hellblazer is a personal favorite, which is why the Constantine failure was so painful for me. I really hope they get this closer to the original character. I can handle some of it being set in the US, but the character *has* to be from the UK.

  3. Jessica says:

DC has always been better at TV than marvel. Minus the x-men and spider-man cartoons from the nineties marvel hasn’t had anything go to TV with any kind of traction for a long time while DC has been making hit live action and animated TV for decades.

Sounds to me like Zatanna and Zatara….

I can’t wait for all the people to say that NBC ripped off Castiel’s look.
