Report: Kyle MacLachlan is Coming to AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. – So Who is the Doctor?

Just who is “The Doctor” and what’s he doing in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? That’s the role io9 is reporting Kyle MacLachlan has nabbed in the ABC series, which heads into season 2 next month.

According to the site, one of their sources is telling them that the once and eternal Agent Cooper/Mayor of Portland/Muad’dib will grace the second episode of the series. Whether this is a recurring role or a one-shot, io9 (and their source) remain silent. But of course, it’s causing us (well, me, at least) to spin out into all manner of speculation.

First off, I don’t think it’s Dr. Strange (as much as I would want that to be the case). I suspect Marvel is going a bit younger with the character when they put him in his own film, even if it would be a kind of revolutionary step to introduce such a major character in the TV show with the film still in the script and planning stage.

Still, Marvel doesn’t exactly have a shortage of doctors at their disposal for the show: there are any number of doctorate holders in the Marvel U that aren’t busy menacing either Spider-Man or the Fantastic Four. Personally, I’m hoping he’s Marvel’s way of slowly getting Gorilla-Man onto the small screen, but I’m probably literally the only person in the world who hopes that.

We do know next season is going to get a bit cosmic, now that alien blood is running through both Agent Coulson and Skye’s veins, and whaddya know, we have some thoughts, questions, and theories on where that might go. Perhaps MacLachlan’s “Doctor” is tied up in that somehow.

The second season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premieres September 24 at 8pm on ABC.

  6. Eric says:

Doctor Who was a Marvel Comic at one point… Maybe the BBC allowed Marvel to give us a glimpse of some future Doctor after Capaldi. Probably not, but one could wish

  7. Heather says:

There is only ONE “The Doctor” and that’s Doctor Who…..now that would be interesting especially with the alien blood that Colson and Skye have…

  8. Hanna R says:

I’m going to say he’s going to be Doctor Faustus.

  9. Tim S. says:

Doctor Bong!  Arch-nemesis to Howard the Duck.  Has to be now that Howard has returned!

  10. Kyle S. says:

Doctor Nemesis would make sense if they’re trying to figure out the alien genetics floating around, assuming he isn’t tied up with the X-License.

    • Paul L. says:

Since Dr. Nemesis started out as a golden age hero, and was part of the Invaders comic, don’t think he would be tied in with the X-Franchise.  He wasn’t an X-Char when Fox got the rights.  They can probably use him, but can’t call him a mutant.
But right after I typed that, realized one thing.  AoS is a TV Show, the rights that Fox has only covers Movies, so they could use him, rights or not.

  11. Dorkpool says:

    [Insert Doctor Who joke here]

  12. emilyooo says:

    Doc Samson, maybe?

  13. Brian Haslip says:

The fact that this article isn’t entitled “Doctor Who?” makes me sad. Such a missed opportunity.

  14. It was reported hours ago that he was Skye’s father.

    • Heather says:

hmmm so that’s where the Doctor’s Daughter went?? They don’t know her powers so if she starts to regenerate-we will know…
