Report: Asa Butterfield in Early Talks to Star in SPIDER-MAN Reboot

Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man might also be your friendly neighborhood Ender Wiggin if the latest reports are to be believed. According to Deadline, Marvel is in early talks with Asa Butterfield (Ender’s Game) to play the role of Peter Parker in their upcoming reboot of Spider-Man. This should not come as a surprise to those who have been keeping an eye on the developing search for the next Wall-Crawler; Butterfield’s name was on a shortlist of actors that also included Nat Wolff (Paper Towns), Liam James (The Way, Way Back), Timothee Chalamet (Interstellar), and Tom Holland (Wolf Hall).

Earlier this year, Marvel negotiated an agreement with Sony Pictures to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As part of that deal, Spider-Man — the Peter Parker version, not Miles Morales — will appear in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War before starring in his own solo film, possibly titled Spider-Man: The New Avenger, in 2017. For those of you worried about experiencing origin story fatigue, don’t worry; Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has already stated that we won’t be subjected to seeing Uncle Ben die a gruesome death for the third time in 15 years. Rather, the film will focus on a high school-aged Peter Parker, dealing with the trials and travails of navigating teenage life and keeping the streets of New York City safe. This won’t be the only Spider-Man-centric film in our future either; Phil Lord and Chris Miller will also be writing and producing an animated standalone Spider-Man movie in the next few years as well

What do you think of this casting? What would you like to see from Marvel’s newest Spider-Man? Is the third time the charm? Let us know in the comments below.
