Reese Witherspoon to Play Live-Action Tinkerbell in Disney’s TINK

In the wake of Disney’s big success with their live-action adaptation of Cinderella, an endless amount of announcements followed about other live-action versions of their classic animated films. Beauty and the Beast is first up, followed by The Jungle Book, Mulan, and most recently, Winnie the Pooh and Pinocchio. Well, we’ve now got one more to add to the mix, as Disney has just announced Tink, a live-action re-imagining of Tinkerbell from Peter Pan, starring Reese Witherspoon as everyone’s favorite little blonde Pixie. Witherspoon will also producing the movie.

Tink is being written by Victoria Strouse, who wrote the script for Pixar’s upcoming Finding Nemo sequel Finding Dory for Pixar. The movie doesn’t have a director yet or a release date, and is still in early development, but is looking to be a more of a mid-budget affair, more akin to Cinderella than Maleficent, which cost considerably more to produce.

According to the original report, it looks like Tink is going to weave in and out of the original narrative of the 1953 animated Peter Pan, like how last year’s Maleficent dealt with the confines of the classic Sleeping Beauty. Disney is probably doing this for two reasons; first, there’s already a straightforward retelling of the classic Peter Pan story with this year’s Pan starring Hugh Jackman, and they don’t want to compete with or be compared to it.

Secondly, the Disney version of Tinkerbell, with her little green dress and blonde hairdo, is distinctive to their version of Peter Pan, and is arguably the most popular aspect of that movie. The Tinkerbell character has a series of straight-to-DVD movies to herself that have been very profitable, and not more than a few weeks go by that I don’t see a Tinkerbell decal on someone’s car. She’s clearly a breakout star prepared for live action version.

So do you think Reese Witherspoon is the right choice for Tinkerbell, or would you rather see another actress take the part? Or are you already totally over all these live-action versions of animated Disney classics? Let us know in the comments below.
