READY PLAYER ONE Shares a First Look at Its ’80s-Style Hero

There has been a lot of hype and anticipation for the film adaptation of Ernest Cline’s megahit novel Ready Player One. However, there hasn’t been much info released on the film. Well finally, we’re getting our first look into the world of the Stacks and OASIS.

If you’re familiar with Cline’s book (and if you aren’t, GO READ IT NOW IT IS SO GOOD), you’ll know that the story is bursting with pop culture references. From the main plot line to little Easter eggs scattered throughout, Cline’s book is a huge love letter to ’80s pop culture. So it’s only fitting that the first photo released from the Steven Spielberg-helmed film in an Entertainment Weekly Comic-Con preview has just as many gems to uncover.

Fittingly, the first look we get of the film is of Tye Sheridan as Wade Watts, a.k.a. Parzival, hanging out in his OASIS gear in his self-proclaimed “fortress of solitude.” Take a peek, and see what surprises you can find in the picture:

The photo gives us a good look at Wade’s OASIS rig, and if you look hard in the corner, you can spot the bike Wade pedals to charge up his gear. You can also see Wade’s other DIY efforts; i.e., the egg cartons he installed on the wall in an attempt to sound-proof his hideout.

Of course, there is a ton more to unpack in this picture, but one of the most noticeable things in the picture (other than Wade himself) is the wall covered with news articles on the creator of OASIS, James Halliday. In the film, Wade is a part of a group of gamers called “gunters,” people who try to solve an elaborate, nearly-impossible puzzle that would grant the winner ownership of OASIS. To win this prize, Wade does everything he can to learn about Halliday and his life and the movies, games, shows, and books that made Halliday the genius he was.

So while Wade’s wall is full of Halliday info, you can also see some touches of Wade’s Halliday-inspired pop culture faves. If you look closely at the high-res image, you can spot a He-Man and the Masters of the Universe lunch box on Wade’s table, and some Garbage Pail Kids stickers nearby on the wall.

Of course, that is only a small portion of the fun you can spot in this picture, and we’ll likely get an even closer look into the film after San Diego Comic Con. But until then, what other Easter eggs did you notice? What do you think of the first look into the film? Tell us what you think in the comments!
