READY PLAYER ONE’s Newest Trailer Asks the Most Important Question

Steven Spielberg‘s big screen adaptation of Ernest Cline‘s novel Ready Player One might end up breaking the record for the most Easter eggs and references in a single movie, but the latest trailer for the film turns its focus away from the visual cornucopia of its virtual reality OASIS and onto the mysterious man who created it, and just how high the stakes are for control of it.

This latest trailer for the film, titled “Dreamer,” contains lots of previously unseen footage from the film, including numerous shots of the budding romance between Tye Sheridan‘s Wade Watts and his competitor-turned-ally Art3mis. But what stands out here is the start, when Watts—also known as Parzival—asks himself what it was the creator of the OASIS, James Halliday was trying to run from when he set up the world’s world’s greatest quest.

Halliday, played by Mark Rylance, set up the contest for who would gain control of his priceless virtual reality world following his death. Despite being deceased though his presence hangs over everything that happens in the story, because the most important Easter egg hunt in history revolves around the things he loved in life.

Of all the trailers and promos for the film, this one best captures just how important Halliday is to the story, because for all the dinosaurs, robots, and DeLoreans, trying to find out what he cared about–and what he was trying to hide from–will determine who controls the OASIS.

Ready Player One arrives in theaters later this month on March 29.
