Sergei Lukyanenko, author of the Night Watch series (note: not the Night’s Watch from Game of Thrones), released a newly translated book this week: The Genome. The science fiction thriller is available in English for the first time ever, and we have an excerpt from Chapter 3 for you to read. And don’t worry, it doesn’t give away too much of the story.
The excerpt introduces us to Alex. He’s a pilot and he’s meeting his new ship for the first time. It’s love at first sight. When Alex lays eyes on Mirror, you can practically hear the romantic music and see the rest of the scene blur and melt away to focus on the man and his ship. Awww!
I’m already intrigued by the descriptive language and surprised to see how fast the world came to life before me. These three pages were enough to pull me in. According to the official synopsis, Alex Romanov is just getting back into the pilot’s seat for the first time after he suffered an accident that left him near death. He’s not your average guy: “Alex is a speshâa human who has been genetically modified to perform particular tasks. As a captain and pilot, Alex has a genetic imperative to care for passengers and crewâno matter what the cost.”
The Genome follows Alex’s first mission on Mirror; he has to take representatives of an alien race to tour human worlds. It sounds simple enough, but there is of course more going on. Read more about the book at Open Road Media.
