RAYMAN Creator Tries Out SUPER MARIO MAKER

Next month, Nintendo is throwing the doors open to Mario fans around the world with the release of Super Mario Maker. This ingenious creation allows gamers to design and play through their own Mario levels using the worlds of Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros.U as a template. Fans can even share their Mario levels online and let other players enter their worlds.

But imagine if an actual game developer got their hands on Super Mario Maker. Enter: Michel Ancel, the creator of Ubisoft’s Rayman series. Ancel started his platform gaming franchise 20 years ago with the original Rayman, and he has continued to guide the series through the well-received Rayman Legends in 2013.

In an absolutely brilliant bit of PR, Nintendo France has released a video of Ancel utilizing Super Mario Maker’s features, while apparently having a great time delving into the world of Nintendo’s iconic plumber. The accompanying interview with Ancel is entirely in French, but it’s still very fascinating to watch even if you don’t speak the language.

Within the video, Ancel tracks his Mario fandom all the way back to the original Donkey Kong arcade game, and the Game & Watch multiscreen Donkey Kong that was released in 1982. Ancel has high praise for Super Mario Land on the original Gameboy, while also citing Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, and Super Mario World as games that inspired him. Additionally, Ancel answers questions about where to start when creating a game level, what goes into a good level, and talks about Super Mario Maker’s appeal to both novice and expert game designers.

Super Mario Maker will be released on September 11, in a simultaneous worldwide release.
