Salutations, Wednesday Warriors! It’s that time of the week again; time to storm the gates, empty our wallets, and bring home a fresh stack of new comics. TOMB RAIDER #1

The Tomb Raider books from Dark Horse Comics have been firing on all cylinders lately. This brand new volume is the latest in a series of greats; writer Markio Tamaki and Phillip Sevy channel Indiana Jones in all the best ways, telling a story that centers on mystery and legend as opposed to mere guns and violence (although there are guns and violence in here). Whether you are a longtime Tomb Raider fan or just a comic book reader looking for some solid action and adventure, this issue will hit your sweet spots. Michael Atiyeh brings some gorgeous colors to the art, adding to the book’s visual flair and making Tomb Raider #1 one hell of a complete package.

THE SHIELD #2

The Shield #2 from Dark Circle Comics

We’ve been waiting a long time for this one, seeing as the first issue of this book dropped last October. The good news is The Shield #2 was worth the wait. Part superhero book, part superspy action (think the Bourne series), part historical mystery, The Shield keeps you guessing page after page, panel after panel. Adam Christopher and Chuck Wendig bring tons of depth to this world, building on our title character’s legacy in fun and exciting ways. This issue also has three different artists, which could be a jarring kiss of death, but smooth color work from Kelly Fitzpatrick and expert lettering by Rachel Deering hold the flow together. The Shield #2 is great and we can’t wait for the next issue, so let’s hope it doesn’t take a couple months to hit shelves.

POWER MAN AND IRON FIST #1

Power Man and Iron Fist #1 from Marvel Comics

Power Man and Iron Fist #1 is another testament to Marvel’s commitment to putting out new and interesting books. There’s no “house style” at Marvel anymore; every book feels tailored to the creative team’s vision. Power Man and Iron Fist #1 is one hundred percent the product of David Walker and Sanford Greene. It’s a buddy comedy in the classic tradition, a team-up that feels like it was ripped from some long forgotten ’80s cop flick, except with superpowers. Walker’s dialogue is razor shape and charming as all hell, you’ll want to read Danny and Luke’s banter forever and ever. Greene’s art is stunning and detailed, every scene feels kinetic, full of energy and movement. The Heroes for Hire have never looked so good. Wherever this series is going, we’re onboard for the ride. Superb stuff from the first page to the last.

AMERICAN MONSTER #2

American Monster #2 from AfterShock Comics

There’s nothing quite like a Brian Azzarello comic. He drives his story and world though characters’ dialogue in the vein of the best Elmore Leonard novels. American Monster is only two issues in, but it already feels like his best work since 100 Bullets. We don’t know the full story yet, but it’s clear that this is a comic about bad people doing bad things. This issue is also a testament to the amazing storytelling of artist Juan Doe. American Monster is simply stunning—a visual feast of anger, violence, and lies. Doe is clearly a superstar in the making; he brings and flow and clarity to every page, setting every scene like a shadow soaked noir. If you like crime comic books, you simply must read American Monster.
