Price Change Incoming for DESTINY: THE TAKEN KING & Bungie Apologizes

One thing I admired while putting over 200 hours into playing Destiny, was how quickly Bungie changed things on the fly. Whether those changes panned out for the better or not is a whole other discussion. But, at least they were quick to adapt to player needs and even fix exploits, like the infamous Loot Cave. Sure, you can argue that plenty of these quick fixes were required because of the game’s faulty design, but I’m just used to developers and publishers taking months to clean up their mess. Now to the good news, Bungie has heard the internet outcry, and will now be rewarding those most loyal of players in the upcoming Destiny expansion, The Taken King.

Those that already own the game will be able to gain access to the previously exclusive emotes and shaders for $20, instead of having to purchase the collectors edition. Previously, those that wanted these exclusive items had to repurchase the original title with the old DLC for a whopping $80. Also, those that have a level 30 guardian or have played The Vault of Glass and The Dark Below will be rewarded with some permanently exclusive items. Welcome to the V.I.P. club.

As pleasant of a gesture as this is, Bungie had almost no choice. The creative director behind the upcoming expansion, Luke Smith, recently did an interview with Eurogamer, in which he came off extremely sarcastic and aloof to player demands. Just in case the above changes weren’t enough to please players, he issued a personal apology letter in the weekly update for good measure. To be fair, Luke Smith is probably a great guy and didn’t mean to anger anyone. He was just trying to answer questions he’s heard about a million times by now the best way he could.

Here’s a small section of his apology:

“Anyone who knows me knows I can be sarcastic, anyone who remembers podcasts I’ve done knows that I can be pretty blunt, and anyone who’s watched me in a ViDoc knows I’m pretty unpolished.

However, most of you don’t know me.

Reading my interview with Eurogamer and imagining it came from some random developer of a game I love – that random developer looks like an Asshat.

But that Asshat was me – and those words rightfully anger you.”

It sounds fairly sincere to me. I still believe the price point to be ridiculous, but it’s a step in the right direction. All we can hope for is a substantial amount of content from The Taken King, $40 worth of content. More updates about items and content will be incoming soon.

Guardians, how do you feel about this change? Is it what you want, or is there more? Stay tuned for more on the Destiny chronicles.
