Is that MIKA? Hall & Oates? Tally Hall? If you asked yourself any of these questions when you pressed play on Vulfpeck’s “Back Pocket”, then you and I had the exact same reaction trying to precisely identify this impressively funky groove.
Vulfpeck are currently an LA-based group, but formed in Michigan (shouts to the Midwest), and they craft ebullient music that takes instrumental notes from a lot of late ’70s to mid eighties pop and funk. They are best known for brilliantly taking advantage of Spotify’s royalty policy by releasing a a silent album called Sleepify and urging fans to listen to it on repeat while sleeping so they could raise fund for a tour, which totally worked according to Billboard.
Generally the group invites featured vocalists to appear on their tracks, and for “Back Pocket”, singer and nurse-by-day Christine Hucal graces the breezy track about passing love letters in 5th grade and stowing them away for after class. Once the the track breaks down into a chipper medley of woodwinds, I always try to find the tab that is playing the song so I can hover anxiously over the replay button. Going to be revisiting this one a lot today.
Vulfpeck’s forthcoming LP, Thrill of the Arts, drops on October 9 via Vulf Records. We’ll be shaking what is beneath our back pockets until that day. Let us know what you guys think of the track and if their vibe reminds you of any other bands I have not mentioned above.
