Premiere: ‘The Emperor’s New Chair’ By Ed Schrader’s Music Beat Reimagines Paul Simon’s ‘You Can Call Me Al’

The original music video for Paul Simon’s “You Can Call Me Al” is a classic: the South African rhythms that pervade Graceland propel Chevy Chase and Paul Simon from an informal sitting position to a synchronized jig inside of that famously flamingo colored room. It is honestly great to re-watch it in 2015, but don’t you get nagged by such a glaring mistake in the concept of the music video. Chevy Chase and Paul Simon magically switching clothes when they high-five is obviously the missing piece of that near-perfect music video.

Or at least that is what the dudes (Ed Schrader and Devlin Rice) from Ed Schrader’s Music Beat thought when they came up with this super strange, yet humorously magnetic music video for their scuzzy scorcher, “The Emperor’s New Chair”. After a lengthy intro (song starts at 2:09) that features plenty of high-five induced wardrobe changes, the duo enter that famous pink room and get goofy as hell, while their brawny rock track compels them to wiggle along. Rice’s flopping  gut while he is air drumming is a little Farley-esque no? But the ridiculousness is the point, much like the song’s reference point, and you can’t help but hit replay and enjoy the tune.

If you are digging their sound, be sure to catch Ed Schrader’s Music Beat on their forthcoming tour!
