Premiere: ‘Leave Me Alone’ By An Intimate Evening With Michael Shaw Is A Loner Anthem

Ever just want to pack a Jansport backpack with a few days worth of clothing, a flashlight, and some snacks, and just flounce all your responsibilities for an impromptu runaway-from-home style road trip? In An Intimate Evening With Michael Shaw’s new video for “Leave Me Alone”, our young protagonist channels this paradigmatic young persons’s compulsion and ventures off into the wilderness with nothing but a bag and a wooden sword. Perhaps he is escaping a fight with his parents, or maybe he is just too imaginative to be cooped up in his bedroom, but the boy’s adventure feels extremely familiar in a fashion at once upsetting and comforting.

“Leave Me Alone” starts off as a piano-driven ballad that doffs its cap to George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass and has the contemporary pop sensibility of Dr. Dog, but not in any way that sounds unoriginal. Shaw’s greatest asset here is his voice, which climbs and warbles as he delivers palpably personal lines about the titular desire to be isolated. As drums and guitar build, providing a pulse to this forlorn track, Shaw produces an aural revelation: the desire to get away is by no means something that you grow out of.

So what I will suggest is: put your headphones on, noise cancel if you can, close your eyes and let this track take you where it will.
