Premiere: Denley Brings Chill Autumn Vibes On “Bone By Bone (feat. Swoonz)”

Fall seems like the best time of year for deep personal reflections. The changing of the leaves and the temperature can remind us of how much we have changed, or perhaps about how we haven’t changed at all, and how we contrast the amorphous weather patterns by staying stuck in our monotonous routines. Fall is also great for more melancholic music that explores these themes, so here comes Denley with “Bone By Bone (feat. Swoonz)”, which is premiering today exclusively on Nerdist. Give it a listen below.

The track’s glitchy but rhytmic instrumental is highlighted by smooth vocals from Swoonz (real name Dayna Gilbert), and Denley said of her performance, “Swoonz sings about feeling stuck emotionally. Old habits, mundane routines, or social trappings of somewhere we’ve lived for a long time can have a lot to do with that.”

Swoonz added, “It’s a song about leaving behind one perspective for another. Who do we build ourselves into and who are we when it crumbles? There is duality in everything including personal imprint. I like to put that notion under a microscope and study it.”

The track is taken from Denley’s new EP, Close, Within Reach, which was released today via Yellow Year Records, and can be purchased here.

Denley said that the EP “was inspired by my working class British parents and grandparents telling me that they occasionally felt as though elements of their life were predestined when they were growing up. Men faced the notion of working in a factory for the rest of their lives or being drafted, and women: domestication and fulfilling the housewife role.”
