Just about every track from Delta Spirit’s 2014 album Into The Wide, plays like a modern day tent-revival anthem. Their floor-shaking rhythms call to mind a thousand stomping feet; their swelling choruses carry the weightiness of a sermon; the voice of frontman Matt Vasquez runs coarse in his effort to be heard. This Brooklyn-based five-piece performs with the energy of traveling Dust Bowl preachers, dead-set on converting their audiences with their brand of gospel, stirring crowds into fits of glossolalia, and producing tracks powerful enough to break out of our atmosphere and reach up to some other celestial body.

At least that’s the case with “Language of the Dead”, the accompanying video for which finds the band traveling through the vast busyness of space in a jet-propelled chili-van, and battling with a giant, floating cat. Okay, so a religious experience this video is not. But what it is, is a whole lot of fun to watch. Vasquez, inspired by the Mel Brooks’ comedies Spaceballs and History of the World: Part I, directed and edited the video, playfully pulling historical characters from the track’s lyrics, and dropping them into a slap-stick solar system. There’s Agamemnon riding a neon Trojan Horse, General Robert E. Lee cranking it up on the rings of Saturn, and Leo Tolstoy hovering in a Fabergé egg. In the epically campy climactic battle, these historical figures, and a handful of others, must join forces to defeat a space monster (cameo by Vasquez’s cat here).
