POKÉMON GO Adds Mew, a Storyline, and Quests

Let’s say you’re soundly addicted to Pokémon GO, but you’ve always felt something was missing. Well, miss it no more! Niantic just announced its latest addition to the game: Mew, that elusive Mythical Psychic-Type pocket monster we all know and love. And coupled with Mew, Niantic’s dropping a number of new research-related features that will have your device rapidly losing battery life.

Later this week, Trainers will get the opportunity to complete research-related tasks divided into two categories: Special Research and Field Research. Special Research activities lead to something new for Pokémon GO: plot development. The more Special Research objectives—some specifically for Professor Willow—you complete, the more the story develops, often tying back to Mew’s origins.

That’s right: in addition to all the exercise you get wandering through fields as you search for your best Grass-Type buddies, you’ll get a story out of Pokémon GO. And it won’t be “I logged 25,000 steps” or “I tripped and fell on the sidewalk because I didn’t have enough Rattatas.” Pretty cool, right?

Field Research, meanwhile, skews closer to the game’s origins with PokéStop-spinning and Pokémon catching. But it does allow for “Research Breakthroughs.” After you’ve earned seven stamps through the completion of individual Field Research tasks—there’s a limit of one stamp a day, because you can’t have everything—you unlock the possibility of encountering a Legendary Pokémon. Again: pretty cool.

According to the Pokémon GO blog, the harder the research, the better the reward. So basically, it’s time to research like you never have before. After all, who doesn’t want to brag to their friends that they’ve finally found Mew in (kind of) real life?

How many hours are you going to spend searching for Mew? Let us know in the comments below!
