POINT BREAK Remake Goes Extreme in New Featurette

The Point Break remake is still seven months away, but the trailer that was released earlier this week has already created a lot of emotional responses from fans of the original film from 1991. Whether you liked it or hated it, Johnny Utah’s line “I believe that like me, the people behind the robberies are extreme athletes” seems destined to be an internet meme for many years to come.

While the original Point Break followed Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves) as he infiltrated a group of surfers who operated as thieves, the remake moves far beyond surfing and expands to include the world of extreme sports.

“I was drawn to Point Break because I’m a big fan of the original film, and [for] a chance to create a new version of that film. And also to expand it in terms of the scale,” explains Point Break director Ericson Core, who was also the cinematographer on The Fast & The Furious. The first Fast & Furious movie appeared to borrow Point Break’s plot and steal its thunder. The question now is whether the Point Break remake can steal it back.

Warner Bros. Pictures has released a new featurette about Point Break that shows off a lot more footage from the movie while expanding on the extreme sports connections and the larger scope of this film.

“Our version of Point Break is going to be a much larger-scale project,” said Core. “Both in terms of the sport and the scale of the movie.”

One thing that the video makes clear is the fact that several of these stunts were real. There may be some digital trickery used to convince audiences that Luke Bracey’s Johnny Utah and Edgar Ramirez’s Bodhi are the ones performing these amazing feats, but they were actually done onscreen by some of the best extreme athletes in the world.

Point Break will dive into theaters on December 25, 2015.
