Playtonic Games Reveals BANJO-KAZOOIE Spiritual Successor YOOKA-LAYLEE

It’s been almost two months since we heard that a group of former Rare employees formed a new company called Playtonic Games, and that their first project would be a spiritual successor to the beloved Banjo-Kazooie. As expected, the internet erupted in sheer pandemonium and had people already wondering what the project was going to look like. Well, wonder no longer. Playtonic Games has finally broken the silence and revealed that the game will be called Yooka-Laylee, starring the adorable duo below.

Aww, aren’t they cute? Yooka is the chameleon, and Laylee is the bat perched on Yooka’s head. Those who are familiar with this nostalgic art style will probably recognize this as the work of Steve Mayles–the mastermind behind the character designs of both Banjo Kazooie and Donkey Kong. Combined, the pair uses their unique abilities to traverse the map and take down baddies.

As for what their abilities are, you can probably already guess. Yooka uses its tongue as a grappling hook to reach other areas of the map, while Laylee, being the cute little bat it is, uses its wings to get its partner from place to place, and also has the ability to use a sonar blast. As for the gender of both characters, Playtonic is leaving that up to you to guess–until they finally reveal them that is.

The developers have also revealed that they will be launching a Kickstarter for the project tomorrow, May 1st. Once finished, everyone who backs the project will be able to snag the title for $15. The company also has plans to release things like art books, soundtracks and even a 64 bit edition. If the game gets funded–which it will–it will release on Windows, Mac, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Wii U.

Playtonic announced via their website that more details will be revealed tomorrow, and hinted that David Wise and Grant Kirkhope tunes will be involved with the project. An interview with Steve Mayles is soon to surface as well. Want to  know more about the project? Keep Nerdist tabbed for updates and new information to come in the future.
