PlayStation’s New Smartphone Messaging App is Here

Sony has announced that the current messaging capabilities of the official PlayStation App for both Android and iOS devices will be removed and turned into its own app today, December 8. This move is reminiscent of what Facebook did with their mobile messaging app. Not everyone was too thrilled about that move since it added more clutter to their phones, but perhaps Playstation’s messaging app will eventually offer some appreciable difference.

Luckily, accessing this separate offering isn’t too difficult. All you have to do to nab the newly minted PlayStation Messages (I know, very creative name) is start up the already available update, and go into the messages section on the PlayStation app when the new data is installed. After that, you’ll be prompted to get the new messenger. You can also find it in the Android and iOS app store.

As of right now, it doesn’t seem like either of the apps have any new features. Both will do the same thing they did before, but of course, they are now separate. Hopefully Sony will continue to support the chat system to make it a more viable choice for gamers.

I’m not sure who uses the PlayStation chat consistently enough to warrant this change (at least when they’re off their consoles), but this should at least streamline the chat for those that enjoy the system.

Do you use the chat on the go? Does this make it easier for you to talk with your fireteam? Let us know how you like the update in the comments below.
