Playing DUNGEONS & DRAGONS in Virtual Reality is Our Future

What happens when small virtual reality companies come up with big ideas? Radacity, of course! A year ago, some genius at AltspaceVR had the brilliant EUREKA moment to bring Wizards of the Coast‘s addictive Dungeons & Dragons to the virtual world, and now the companies are working together. You can check out the look and feel of it in the video above.

According to Bruce Wooden, AltspaceVR’s head of developer relations, the VR version of the game is pretty addictive. He told Gizmodo recently that testers of the new environment and game were unwilling to take off their Oculus DK2 for hours at a time. Given that the sessions we’ve been playing are averaging 4-5 hours at a time, this news does not surprise us.

The virtual set up is a bit like a split screen with virtual avatars gathering around a game mat and virtual character pieces. Players also have the ability to access a variety of dice, and Dungeon Masters have access to a whole slew of other abilities like music selections. The game is still just a prototype, set up to work with the Oculus DK2, so it won’t be commercially available until 2016. In other words, you have plenty of time to get some campaign experience under your role-playing belt and convince your friends that you all need to buy the system.

Are you ready to give up your pizza nights on the couch with your buddies? Tell us if you are in the market for this virtual D&D experience in the comments below.
