PLAYER PIANO Wakes the Walkers with THE WALKING DEAD Theme

In one of their moodiest cinematic videos yet, the Player Piano team of Sonya Belousova and Tom Grey have not only created a musical ode to The Walking Dead, but a visual one. Recreating Rick Grimes’ memorable hospital bed waking scene, this edition finds Sonya as the protagonist in this post-zombie-apocalypse reality.

Recreating a score like The Walking Dead‘s for piano is no small task; the busy and rapid keystrokes of a violin are difficult to recreate on a piano for anyone without experience and command of a piano’s keys. Sonya is one such person with that level of skill, and her fast finger-work in her arrangement of Bear McCreary’s theme is nothing short of mesmerizing. Accompanying Sonya in the last half of the video is violinist Eriko Tsuji, who also appears as one of the walkers in the video before busting in to some righteous string-playing. Unfortunately, Eriko’s walker character does not [spoiler alert] survive at the end.

Though the timing of this video coincides closer to the recent record-breaking premiere of The Walking Dead spinoff, Fear The Walking Dead, the release has been waiting in the wings for a while. Securing the rights for the music set back the premiere of this video slightly, but we can all now appreciate this scary-awesome reproduction in all its glory. There are even a few photos in the gallery below that give a few looks behind-the-scenes of the production of the video.

If you’re a pianist and you’d like to take a crack at some of Sonya’s other popular arrangements—like her versions of the Doctor Who theme or “Bohemian Rhapsody“—they can be purchased here.
