Placing a Red Hot Nickel Ball on Guitar Strings Is Strangely Satisfying

Sometimes people take a simple suggestion way too far. Sometimes, taking a simple suggestion way too far is strangely satisfying to watch. Take the case of YouTube user carsandwater. He or she posted a video of what happens when you place a red hot ball of nickel on a set of guitar strings. Why would he do such a thing? He posted, “My Uncle suggested testing the effect heat would have on the tuning of a guitar :)” (Emoticon is hers/his. Don’t send hate mail.)

The video starts off with an acoustic guitar laid on its back and that nickel ball, in pliers, held over the strings. When the guitar is strummed, you can hear small changes in the open G tuning. So, Uncle carsandwater is satisfied, right? The thing is, if you go out of your way to heat up a giant ball of nickel over a flame and set up a clearly homemade stand with some nails (which we’re absolutely sure is totally safe to do), you can’t just leave it at that. You have to cause at least a little destruction.

The ball is held right on the strings, which begin popping. The E string puts up a pretty good fight, but not enough to stop the guitar cataclysm. Then the ball is held on the strings so long it falls through and sets the guitar on fire. So metal! Speaking of metal, the same thing is done on an electric, which I believe is a copy of a Stratocaster. It fairs just as well as the acoustic, popped strings and all.

Like a true rockstar, after the string destruction and the flames, carsandwater just restrings the guitars and plays them again. Check out the video and do not try this at home.
