We’re in Love with THE GOOD DINOSAUR Concept Art

Let’s all be real here for a second: what the people at Pixar do is nothing short of magic. And getting to hear and see the process behind that proves it all the more. This might be why we’re soooo obsessed with the concept art for The Good Dinosaur the Disney-backed company released out to the press who attended a press weekend for the film last week. I was that lucky soul here at Nerdist (living the dream, folks), tasked with attending the two-day affair, and our takeaway from the whole thing? This is going to be one helluva visual stunner.

Because, as Effects Supervisor John Reich mentioned to us during our time at Pixar HQ, this film was “a new level of FX work” for the company, with the nature and environment essentially taking on the role of emotion in the film. Because of that—and the inclusion of grand landscapes pulled from U.S. Geological Survey data of the Grand Tetons Mountains and surrounding areas—the film has a painterly sort of photorealism to it that’s truly unlike anything we’ve ever seen from Pixar. We don’t want to give too much away, but the light and the water in the film will blow your mind (or in the very least, make you very confused about what is reality and what is animation).

But there’s also the main characters: Arlo the dinosaur and Spot the human. Flipping the “boy-and-his-dog” narrative on its head (the dog in this film is Spot), director Peter Sohn hoped to create two relatable protagonists for which the audience really roots, but are also imbued with that playful Pixar style. You’ll notice all of that in more in the concept art below (the sticks in Scout’s hair might be one of the cutest character details we’ve seen in one of their films).

So check out the images below and don’t you worry: we’ve got a ton more where that came from in the coming weeks. Stay tuned to Nerdist for interviews with the creative forces behind the next Pixar cryfest.

Are you going to check out The Good Dinosaur? Let’s discuss in the comments.
