Pokémon sure aren’t real, but that hasn’t stopped countless children (and children at heart) from imagining what it would be like to have their own superpowered creatures to battle with, to play with, and to talk with. There’s one problem with talking to (non-Team Rocket’s Meowth) Pokémon, though: Aside from syllables from their own name and some grunts and other physical noises, they really don’t say much.
That said, who wouldn’t want to have a Pikachu to answer their questions with an enthusiastic “Pika pi” cry? That will soon be possible thanks to the upcoming “Pikachu Talk” app that will be available on Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Google Home Mini (via The Verge).
To be clear, it doesn’t seem like this app is going to be a Pokémon-themed voice assistant that will tell you where the veterinarian’s office is but call it a Pokémon Center, and do other cute things like that. No, it looks like the experience will be pretty literal: If you ask Pikachu, “Hey, what’s the weather for tomorrow,” its answer will be something like, “Pi Pi Pikachu!”
We imagine most of you don’t speak Pikachu, so while you won’t be able to get much useful real-world information from your electric assistant, it should be good for a quick laugh. “Pikachu Talk” is expected to launch in Japan by the end of the year, and then elsewhere at some point in 2018.
