Tatooine is a rough place both in the Star Wars universe and in ours. The Lars home where Luke Skywalker lived is actually nestled in the desert landscape of Tunisia, and sand is a constant force to be reckoned with. Yes, Anakin Skywalker was right about something. Sand’s the worst. Fan groups have put hours of volunteer work into preserving the Lars homestead over the years; the former filming site requires regular upkeep in order to protect structures from erosion and to prevent sand dunes from covering everything.
In order to help preserve Tatooine for future generations and future Skywalkers, the Save the Lars Homestead fan group is using Kickstarter to raise funds by selling watches containing sand from Tatooine. The design is in its second edition, and the watches are both elegant and incredibly geeky.
They’re built by hand so they get automatic classy points. The sand in these watches was gathered from the Lars homestead site and won’t get everywhere. The grains are encased in a capsule and on display underneath the watch face. The design even has a little picture of Luke’s moisture farm home, and the numbers and text are in Aurebesh. Naturally. Even if you don’t wear a watch, it’s a lovely collectible to own.
You can back the limited edition watches at a few different levels: the basic watch is $81 and a 501st Legion edition is $77. You have until October 2nd to back the Kickstarter project and order a Tatooine sand watch.
