This week in Pickstarter, we’re seeing how Nic Cage and Tim Burton killed Superman, the return of an animation legend, and a backpack mount that lends a helping hand.
Pick #1 – The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened? by Jon Schnepp
We love Tim Burton around these parts, but when he was set to direct a Superman reboot film in the late ’90’s, even we were scratching our heads at every decision that came to light. Superman Lives was to be a feature film that capitalized on the sales boom around the “Death and Return of Superman” story lines in the comics. Jon Schnepp, a writer & director on Metalocalypse and director of the upcoming crowdfunded animated series Grimm Fairy Tales, became obsessed with the film, collecting any snippet of concept art he could find off the internet. His desire to see this unfinished film for the cheese-fest it surely would have been has now pushed him to make his own documentary about it. One of the most competent nerd historians we know tracking down the answers as to why Nic Cage didn’t get off the ground as Kal-El? We’re in. Stay tuned to Nerdist.com this week for an interview with Jon about the The Death of Superman Lives.
Pick #2 –Last Days of Coney Island by Ralph Bakshi
When we last spoke to director Ralph Bakshi (Street Fight, American Pop, Lord of the Rings), he wasn’t sure if he wanted to continue pursuing films. The director was pretty focused on the business side of things when coming to that conclusion, but after a year of promoting Wizards on Blu-ray and attending various cons, Bakshi may have discovered that he’s more loved and appreciated than he realized. With that in mind, he’s taking his script Last Days of Coney Island and going straight to the people who have made his films cult classics and asking them to be his producers. Set against the heyday of Coney Island in the 1950’s, the film will be broken into shorts featuring stories of strippers, crooked cops and a little bit of murder. Ralph’s films may have the oddest way of showing it, but they have all the heart in the world, and we can’t wait to see him back in form again.
Pick #3 – VuPackPole: POV/Action Camera Backpack Mount for Go Pro
It may not have the sexiest name (The VuPackPole sounds like a political faction on Romulus in Star Trek), but this backpack camera mount can give your videos a third-person perspective without the need for a documentary crew following you around. Trying to make a Resident Evil 4 fan film? This mount will let you get the Leon Kennedy over-the-shoulder framing with ease. Hands-free filming at angles that allow you to be in your shots is great, but remember we’ll now get a great shot of any burgeoning bald spot that may be developing.
Superman is favorite hero.
