Greetings! Welcome to Pickstarter, our weekly look at the best and brightest projects looking for a little help from their friends (and strangers, and relatives…) This week we’re highlighting an album of space inspired tunage, a documentary on the zombie horde and their invasion of our culture, and an adorable squad management war game.

Pick #1 – The Sky is Calling: Kim Boekbinder’s Space Album

In space no one can hear you scream, but on Earth we can hear just fine, especially if what we’re hearing is songs about space. Kim Boekbinder looks to be taking a page out of the GZA’s playbook and is dedicating her latest album to the sharing of science. The album had two science advisors to help Kim craft songs that would properly celebrate man’s race to the stars. Some of the songs even include rhythm tracks from imported NASA visual data. Trippy. The first single is available for download if you pledge, but we have the video for you right here:

Pick #2 – War Heroes 

Shall we play a game? Using similar game mechanics to what we’ve seen in squad based strategy games like X-Com and Halo Wars, War Heroes puts you in command of a squad of adorable 16 bit sprite soldiers. The game tasks you with building up your squad in an alternate-timeline World War 2, complete with mechs and enhanced battle armor. The game is being developed for iOS, but if it exceeds its goals, developers plan to expand it to Mac, PC and Android platforms.

Pick #3 – Doc of the Dead

Somewhere along the way our culture caught a fever, most likely from a zombie bite. And the only cure for that fever is more zombies. In the early oughts, the remake of Dawn of the Dead and the hilarious Shaun of the Dead reinvigorated zombie fan culture around the world. Soon followed by The Walking Dead, zombie walks and even their own convention, zombie fanatics have had cause for celebration as the undead love flows. Doc of the Dead aims to examine our obsession with zombies in our pop culture as well as the rising fear of a real zombie apocalypse that is gripping the nation. Featuring interviews with Simon Pegg and George Romero, planned chats with Max Brooks and a variety of fans, and even vignettes from Red Letter Media’s Mr. Plinkett, the film will take an expansive look at the undead craze and where it may be going. The film is from the creators behind The People Vs. George Lucas, but don’t let the name fool you. PVGL was a great love letter to fans of the Star Wars series and George himself, and we look forward to seeing what happens when they turn their lens towards the zed word.
