Pickstarter: Help COMEDY FILM NERDS Make EAR BUDS: The Podcasting Documentary

UPDATE: In a last-minute comeback that rivals the biggest in history… okay, that might be a bit much, but they made it! The movie is a go!

Our friends at Comedy Film Nerds, Graham Elwood and Chris Mancini, are planning to make a documentary about podcasting, specifically the unique bond between podcasters and their listeners. They need your help to do it. Yep, Kickstarter. Here you go:

It’s interesting that a podcasting documentary — it’ll be called Ear Buds — will be made by successful podcasters, but Graham and Chris are the guys to do it — they’ve made movies before, and they’re also (with my friend Dave Anthony of Walking the Room and Maron, and did I just hear a thunderclap?) the guys behind the very successful L.A. Podcast Festival (which they Kickstarted as well and at which the footage you see in the video, with Doug Benson interviewed and Jonah Ray glimpsed, was shot). These are guys who are all in on podcasting, and that is likely to show in the finished product.

Let them tell you what this is about:

Podcasting breaks down the barriers. There are no filters. No studio notes. No editing unless the podcaster wants to. Artist go directly to the fans, and the fans get to know the podcasters. Often learning intimate details of their lives. And this forms a bond and a connection that other media simply does not come close to.

We will be interviewing such podcasting luminaries such as Doug Benson, Marc Maron, Aisha Tyler, Jimmy Pardo, and the creative minds behind Welcome to Night Vale, Jeffrey Cranor and Joseph Fink. And many, many more. We’ll also we talking to the fans as well.

As podcasters ourselves, we’ve gotten to know the fans, often personally, and they have gotten to know us. People have told us we have helped get them through rough times, even though on the surface we are just talking about movies. So there is a connection there that we are humbled by.

And we wouldn’t have it any other way. Because at it’s digital heart, podcasting is about human connections.

Pledge premiums include a download at $25, a signed DVD at $50, a signed DVD and poster at $100, all the way up to Executive Producer credit, passes to the L.A. Podcast Festival, and all the other rewards for $10,000. (Despite Graham’s claims in the video, there is not a murder tier and not a blow tier.) (Officially.) If you’re interested in backing the project, go here to sign up. They’re looking to raise $135,000 by February 24th, so get to it.
